Chicago Public Schools

Chicago Public Schools, commonly abbreviated as CPS by local residents and politicians, is a large school district that manages over 600 public elementary and high schools in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago Public Schools is currently the third largest school district in the United States, with more than 400,000 students enrolled in the school district. It is led by CEO Arne Duncan. The position of CEO of the CPS was created by Mayor Richard M. Daley after he successfully convinced the Illinois State Legislature to place CPS under the mayor's control.

CPS is a vast system of primary, secondary, and disability schools confined to Chicago's city limits. This system is the second largest employer in Chicago.[1] Some schools are new construction, some appear gothic in architecture, and others are deteriorating from years of lack of attention.

Most schools in the district, being PreK-8, elementary, middle, or secondary, have attendance boundaries, restricting student enrollment outside of any given residential area.

Attendance boundaries are average, depending on how many schools are located within a neighborhood.

For example, Beverly has at least four public K-8 schools: Barnard, Clissold, Vanderpoel, Kellogg, and Sutherland. Each school restricts enrollment based on their individual attendance boundaries. A school may elect to enroll students outside their attendance boundaries if there is space, and or if it has a magnet cluster program. Full magnet schools, such as Gunsaulus Scholastic Academy, are open to student enrollment citywide, provided that applicants meet a level of high academic standards: living near a magnet school does not guarantee admission.

Chicago Public Schools also supports magnet schools, such as Walt Disney Magnet School, Sabin Magnet School, Galileo Scholastic Academy, and 35 other magnet schools. Magnets offer a variety of academic programs with various focuses (agriculture, fine arts, international baccalaureate, Montessori, Math, Literature, and Paideia programs, among others).

The school system also contains nine regional gifted centers, including: Lenart Regional Gifted Center, Beasley Regional Gifted Center, Beaubien Regional Gifted Center, Bell Regional Gifted Center, Carnegie Regional Gifted Center, Edison Regional Gifted Center, Keller Regional Gifted Center,Pritzker Regional Gifted Center, and South Loop Regional Gifted Center.

2005 Teacher layoffs

School administrators issued advanced dismissal notices to approximately 1,116 untenured teachers between March and April 2005. A change in the 2003-2007 Agreement Between the Board of Education and Chicago Teachers Union allowed for a clause giving principals the power to dismiss untenured teachers without due process. Principals can login to a website, select a reason from six items listed on a drop-down menu, and click a submit button. At least fifty-percent of the dismissed teachers experienced difficulty controlling their classrooms. Other reasons for dismissal include poor communication skills and rapport with fellow teachers and parents. The fact that principals can simply choose "other" from the drop-down menu is a cause for controversy. While the intent was to have "other" encompass such reasons as insubordination, it could also be used for budget-related firings. Per union restrictions, principles facing budget constraints may not cut costs by firing poor employees as would a business (they may only be fired for cause).

Performance

The April 21, 2006 issue of the Chicago Tribune revealed a study released by the Consortium on Chicago School Research that stated that 6 of every 100 CPS freshmen would earn a bachelor's degree by age 25. 3 in 100 black or Latino men would earn a bachelor's degree by age 25. The study tracked Chicago high school students who graduated in 1998 and 1999. 35% of CPS students who went to college earned their bachelor's degree within six years, below the national average of 64%.[1]

Chicago has a history of high dropout rates, with around half of students failing to graduate for the past 30 years. Criticism is directed at the CPS for inflating its performance figures. Through such techniques as counting students who swap schools before dropping out as transfers but not dropouts, it publishes graduation claims as high as 71%. Nonetheless, throughout the 1990s actual rates seem to have improved slightly, as true graduation estimates rose from 48% in 1991 to 54% in 2004.[2]

As announced on September 8, 2006, due to an ongoing series of campaigns and programs, including one which emphasized the importance of fathers accompanying their children to the first day of school, and parents picking up their children's report cards, first day attendance rose from a previous year high of 92% in 2005 to 92.8% for the first day of classes, Tuesday, September 5, 2006.

Atlanta Botanical Gardens

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a 30 acre (12 hectare) botanical garden located adjacent to Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Incorporated in 1976, the garden's mission is to "develop and maintain plant collections for the purposes of display, education, conservation, research and enjoyment".

History

Following a petition by citizens of Atlanta in the year 1973, the garden was incorporated in 1976 as the private, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation Atlanta Botanical Garden Inc.. Within a year Bill Warner, previously employed at Holden Arboretum, was assigned office as the first executive director. He was soon followed by Ann L. Crammond in 1979. The following year, 1980, marked a turning point in the history of the garden as a 50-year lease was negotiated with the city, securing the site of the Garden for years to come.

A number of promotional activities started taking place, including social events, major art exhibitions and the annual{fact} Garden of Eden Ball. The Atlanta Botanical Garden welcomed its 50.000th visitor within a mere three years after the lease was arranged - this was even before any permanent structures had been erected. In 1985, the Atlanta Botanical Garden built its first permanent structure, the Gardenhouse. Expansions following this were The Children's Garden (1999), the Fuqua Conservatory in 1989 and the Fuqua Orchid Center which was added in 2002.

Blockbuster summertime exhibitions began in 2003 with TREEmendous TREEhouses. Chihuly in the Garden opened in 2004, while in 2005 Locomotion in the Garden featured G-scale model trains. On April 29, 2006, an exhibition of the sculpture of Niki de Saint Phalle opened to the public. These huge mosaic sculptures came to the Garden from France, Germany, and California. In 2007 the exhibition was David Rogers' Big Bugs and Killer Plants, and 2008 is Sculpture in Motion, Art Choreographed by Nature, a display of moving, kinetic art.

Exhibits

The Botanical Garden is composed of a number of smaller themed gardens. Each contains different landscapes to display a variety of plants. Near the entrance are formal gardens, such as the Japanese garden and the rose garden. Two woodland areas, the 5 acres (20,000 m2) Upper Woodland and the 10 acres (40,000 m2) Storza Woods feature large trees and shade-loving flowers and undergrowth. The Children's Garden features whimsical sculptures, fountains, and interpretive exhibits on botany, ecology, and nutrition.

The 16,000 square feet (1,500 m2) Dorothy Chapman Fuqua Conservatory contains indoor exhibits of plants from tropical rainforests and deserts. The rain forest room of the Fuqua Conservatory is also populated by tropical birds, turtles, and several exhibits of poison dart frogs. The collaborative amphibian conservation efforts between the Atlanta Botanical Garden and Zoo Atlanta can be seen at:(www.saveafrog.org). Adjoining this building, the Fuqua Orchid Center contains separate rooms simulating the tropics and high elevations in order to house rare orchids from around the world.

The Fuqua Orchid Center is home to the largest collection of species orchids on permanent display in the U.S. and hosts a wintertime display known as Orchid Daze. Its unique Tropical High Elevation House provides the correct habitat for montane orchids and companion plants from around the equator at elevations of 6,000 to 10,000 feet. An Air Washer System, technology adapted from the textile industry, was combined with traditional greenhouse heating and cooling to create this environment, and allows rare orchids to thrive. The Tropical Display House is filled with fragrant orchids from around the world.

Chihuly in the Garden Exhibition

In 2004, the Atlanta Botanical Garden hosted an extremely successful exhibition of glass art by Dale Chihuly titled "Chihuly in the Garden". The exhibit ran through the end of October and was extended until December 31, 2004. During the eight-month run, an estimated 425,000 attendees visited the exhibit. The peak per-day rates of 7500 were double the previous single-day attendance record at the Garden.

On December 18, 2008, the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission filed a complaint (SEC v. Devlin, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Case No. 08-Civ-11001 (JGK)) alleging a scheme for trading stocks on inside information ahead of public announcements of mergers and acquisitions. The complaint alleges that, among other people, one Jamil A. Bouchareb traded on inside information. The complaint names as a "relief defendant" Maria T. Checa, age 38, a resident of Greensboro, North Carolina, who worked as a model and actress, and states that Checa and Bouchareb lived together from about September 2004 until mid-2007. The complaint alleges that Bouchareb provided inside information to Checa, and that Checa and her company Checa International traded on the inside information, and that Checa, Checa International, Bouchareb, his parents and others to whom he provided information reaped illegal profits of more than $4.2 million. The complaint alleges that it would not be just, equitable or conscionable to allow Checa and Checa International to retain illegal profits obtained as part of and in furtherance of the securities fraud and seeks to recover such profits from Checa and Checa International, though it is not alleged that they violated the law. (Bouchareb was also criminally charged in a related case brought by the U.S. Attorney.)

Mike Mad Dog Bell

Pro wrestler 'Mad Dog' Bell found dead

What is going on in the wrestling world?
Mike "Mad Dog" Bell, a former professional wrestler whose struggle with substance abuse was featured in the documentary "Bigger, Stronger, Faster," has died. He was 37.

Bell was found Sunday at a Costa Mesa live-in rehabilitation facility, his family said.

An autopsy was conducted but investigators couldn't immediately determine the cause of death, said Dan Akin, a supervising deputy at the Orange County coroner's division. The coroner is awaiting the results of toxicology tests, he said.

Chris Bell, whose 2008 documentary examines the steroid use of his two brothers, said Mike Bell had long battled with his addictions to prescription painkillers and alcohol.

"He was always wrestling, he was a personal trainer, he was always pushing his body to the max," Chris Bell told the Orange County Register.

"You can't really blame wrestling, but it's kind of the lifestyle," he said. "You have a couple of painkillers to get to the next match, have a couple drinks night to night and it gets out of hand."

Bell wrestled on World Wrestling Entertainment's "Monday Night Raw" as a "jobber," a fighter who takes falls to promote others.

"Although Mr. Bell was never under a WWE contract, WWE extends its deepest condolences to the Bell family," the organization said.

Former professional wrestler turned personal trainer Mike “Mad Dog” Bell died at the age of thirty-seven at a live-in rehabilitation facility in Costa Mesa, California last Sunday.

Mike’s brother Chris Bell said, his brother had an up and down battle with his addictions and had checked himself into Romona House.

Mike’s struggles with abuse were documented in a film called “Bigger, Stronger, and Faster.”

In an interview with reporters, Chris said, “You can’t really blame wrestling, but it’s kind of the lifestyle. You have a couple of painkillers to get to the next match, have a couple of drinks night to night and it gets out of hand.”

WWE released a statement saying, “Although Mr. Bell was never under a WWE contract, and WWE extends its deepest condolences to the Bell Family.”

Medina City Schools

Norton district receives ODDC grant

During the last Norton City Schools District Board of Education meeting of the year, Dec. 15, Valerie Riedthaler, director of pupil services, gave a progress report on her efforts to secure a grant from the Ohio Developmental Disability Council (ODDC).

According to Riedthaler, the district received a $5,000 grant from the ODDC, which is a planning and advocacy body committed to community inclusion for people with developmental disabilities, according to Riedthaler. The grant funds awarded will primarily pay for career coaches, which assist students with disabilities during their transition from high school, said Riedthaler. These transition services include general life skills and assisting students planning to continue their education in postsecondary schools, including vocational and career schools and two- and four-year colleges and universities.

Also during the meeting, the board:

  • unanimously approved membership in the Summit Regional Health Care Consortium (SRHCC). According to district officials, membership promotes cooperative agreements and activities among SRHCC’s members in purchasing supplies and services and dealing with problems of mutual concerns in regard to health benefits. Local membership includes Copley-Fairlawn, Norton and Medina city schools and Revere Local Schools;
  • unanimously OK’d board member Cindy Webel as president pro tempore for the organizational meeting, which will take place Jan. 12 at 6 p.m.; and
  • unanimously approved a four-hour-per-day educational assistant II position at Norton Primary School.

In other business, district Business Manager Ken Caldwell announced the application process for the Ohio Clean Diesel School Bus Retrofit Grant Program has begun.

“Currently there are 18 buses in the district, [and] because of their age, [they] meet the requirements for the retrofit,” Cadwell said. “The retrofitting process is less expensive and it comes with a matching portion from the program.”

The retrofit process adds devices to the muffler system that reduce pollution, he said.

In other school news, Sharon Herchik, director of curriculum and instruction, announced a recommendation to approve the following new math textbooks: “Mathematics for Business and Personal Finance,” “Algebra I,” “Algebra II” and “Geometry.” All books are available in an online version for teachers and students, according to district officials. The teacher’s instruction textbook comes with additional resources on a flash drive.

The next school board meeting is set for Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Norton High School Library/Media Center, 4128 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road.

Watergate Scandal

The Watergate scandals were a series of American political scandals during the presidency of Richard Nixon that resulted in the indictment of several of Nixon's closest advisors, and ultimately his resignation on August 9, 1974.

The scandals began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Office complex in Washington, D.C. on June 17, 1972. Investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and later by the Senate Watergate Committee, House Judiciary Committee and the press revealed that this burglary was one of many illegal activities authorized and carried out by Nixon's staff. They also revealed the immense scope of crimes and abuses, which included campaign fraud, political espionage and sabotage, illegal break-ins, improper tax audits, illegal wiretapping on a massive scale, and a secret slush fund laundered in Mexico to pay those who conducted these operations.[1] This secret fund was also used as hush money to buy silence of the seven men who were indicted for the June 17 break-in.[2][3]

Nixon and his staff conspired to cover up the break-in as early as six days after it occurred.[4] After two years of mounting evidence against the President and his staff, which included former staff members testifying against them in a Senate investigation, it was revealed that Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices and that he had recorded many conversations.[5][6] Recordings from these tapes revealed that he had obstructed justice and attempted to cover up the break-in.[4][7] This recorded conversation later became known as the Smoking Gun. After a series of court battles, the United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled in United States v. Nixon that the President had to hand over the tapes; he ultimately complied.

With certainty of an impeachment in the House of Representatives and of a conviction in the Senate, Nixon resigned ten days later, becoming the only US President to have resigned from office.[8][9] His successor, Gerald Ford, would issue a controversial pardon for any federal crimes Nixon may have committed while in office.

Mark Felt, 'Deep Throat' from Watergate scandal, dies

An FBI official during the 1972 crisis that eventually brought down the Nixon presidency, he kept his identity secret for more than 30 years.

Mark Felt, the FBI official who as the anonymous journalistic source "Deep Throat" helped bring down President Richard Nixon, died Thursday at his home in Santa Rosa, Calif. He was 95.

Felt suffered from congestive heart failure, but the immediate cause of death was not known.

In 2005, more than 30 years after his whistle-blowing helped topple a presidency, Felt held a news conference on the front steps of his Santa Rosa home. Felt, then 91, revealed that he was "Deep Throat," the anonymous source who in 1972 leaked information to Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein about the Watergate scandal that led to Nixon's resignation in 1974.

Felt's role, but not his identity, was depicted in a 1974 book titled "All the President's Men" by Woodward and Bernstein and in a film of the same title released in 1976. His role was explored in detail in Woodward's 2005 book, "The Secret Man," and in Felt's 2006 autobiography, "A G-Man's Life."

As associate FBI director, Felt was one of the first to learn about the 1972 burglary at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate apartment complex and to realize its connection to Nixon's reelection campaign.

Days after the break-in, Nixon and White House staff talked about putting pressure on the FBI to slow down the investigation. Fearing that the investigation would be sabotaged and justice subverted, Felt began giving information to Woodward, whom he had known for several years.

According to the Washington Post, counterintelligence tricks that Felt learned during World War II became part of his relationship with the Post reporters: A flowerpot on Woodward's balcony would indicate that the reporter required a meeting, while a clock face inked on the reporter's daily New York Times would reveal the time Felt would be waiting in an underground parking garage.

Geronimo

Biography

Geronimo, U.S. prisoner

Goyathlay (Geronimo) was born to the Bedonkohe band of the Apache, near Turkey Creek,[2] a tributary of the Gila River in the modern-day state of Arizona,[3] then part of Mexico, but which his family considered Bedonkohe land. He had three brothers and four sisters.

Geronimo's father, Tablishim, and mother, Juana, educated him according to Apache traditions. He married a woman from the Chiricahua band of Apache when he was 17; they had three children. On March 5, 1851, a company of 400 Mexican soldiers from Sonora led by Colonel José María Carrasco attacked Geronimo's camp outside Janos while the men were in town trading. Among those killed were Geronimo's wife, Alope, his children, and his mother. His chief, Mangas Coloradas, sent him to Cochise's band for help in revenge against the Mexicans. It was the Mexicans who named him Geronimo. This appellation stemmed from a battle in which he repeatedly attacked Mexican soldiers with a knife, ignoring a deadly hail of bullets, in reference to the Mexicans' plea to Saint Jerome ("Jeronimo!"). The name stuck.[1]

The first Apache raids on Sonora appear to have taken place during the late 17th century. To counter the early Apache raids on Spanish settlements, presidios were established at Janos (1685) in Chihuahua and at Fronteras (1690) in northern Opata country. In 1835, Mexico had placed a bounty on Apache scalps. Two years later Mangas Coloradas or Dasoda-hae (Red Sleeves) became principal chief and war leader and began a series of retaliatory raids against the Mexicans. Apache raids on Mexican villages were so numerous and brutal that no area was safe.[4]

While Geronimo said he was never a chief, he was a military leader. As a Chiricahua Apache, this meant he was also a spiritual leader ( war shaman ) who was recognized for holding and using specific supernatural "powers". Among these were the ability to walk without leaving tracks; the abilities now known as telekinesis and telepathy; and the ability to survive gunshot ( rifle/musket, pistol, and shotgun ). Geronimo was wounded numerous times by both bullets and buckshot, but survived. Warriors who followed him offered first-hand eye-witness testamony regarding his many "powers" while on the warpath and declared that this was the main reason why so many chose to follow him ( he was favored by/protected by, "Usen", the Apache high-god). Geronimo's "powers" were considered to be so great that he personally painted the faces of the warriors who followed him to reflect their protective capactities. The well-known white stripe across the face and over the nose, and the red dot or circle on the forehead were Geronimo's personal war paint pattern which can be seen on some of his warriors in the photos taken of them before their last surrender. During his career as a war leader, Geronimo was notorious for consistently urging raids and war upon Mexican Provinces and their various towns, and later against American locations across Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas.[5]

He married Chee-hash-kish and had two children, Chappo and Dohn-say. Then he took another wife, Nana-tha-thtith, with whom he had one child. He later had a wife named Zi-yeh at the same time as another wife, She-gha, one named Shtsha-she and later a wife named Ih-tedda. Some of his wives were captured, such as the young Ih-tedda. Wives came and went, overlapping each other, being captured and added to the family, lost, or even given up, as Geronimo did with Ih-tedda when he and his band surrendered. At that time he kept his wife She-gha but abandoned the younger wife, Ih-tedda. Geronimo's last wife was Azul.

Though outnumbered, Geronimo fought against both Mexican and United States troops and became famous for his daring exploits and numerous escapes from capture from 1858 to 1886. One such escape, as legend has it, took place in the Robledo Mountains of southwest New Mexico. The legend states Geronimo and his followers entered a cave, and the U.S. Soldiers waited outside the cave entrance for him, but he never came out. Later it was heard that Geronimo was spotted in a nearby area. The second entrance to the cave has yet to be found and the cave is still called Geronimo's Cave. At the end of his military career, he led a small band of 36 men, women, and children. They evaded 5,000 U.S. troops (a quarter of the army at the time)[citation needed] and many units of the Mexican army for a year. His band was one of the last major forces of independent Indian warriors who refused to acknowledge the United States Government in the American West.

Pursuit and capture

In 1886, General Nelson A. Miles selected Captain Henry Lawton, in command of B Troop, 4th Cavalry, at Ft. Huachuca to lead the expedition that captured Geronimo. Numerous stories abound as to who actually captured Geronimo, or to whom he surrendered. For Lawton's part, he was given orders to head up actions south of the U.S.–Mexico boundary where it was thought Geronimo and a small band of his followers would take refuge from U.S. authorities. Lawton was to pursue, subdue, and return Geronimo to the U.S., dead or alive.

Lawton's official report dated September 9, 1886 sums up the actions of his unit and gives credit to a number of his troopers for their efforts. Geronimo gave credit to Lawton's tenacity for wearing the Apaches down with constant pursuit. Geronimo and his followers had little or no time to rest or stay in one place. Completely worn out, the little band of Apaches returned to the U.S. with Lawton and officially surrendered to General Miles on September 4, 1886 at Skeleton Canyon, Arizona. While the debate over who Geronimo surrendered to goes on, it should be remembered that Native Americans rarely 'surrendered' to junior officers. They surrendered to General officers or higher.[citation needed]

Geronimo and other warriors were sent as prisoners to Fort Pickens, Florida, and his family was sent to Fort Marion. They were reunited in May 1887, when they were transferred to Mount Vernon Barracks in Alabama for five years. In 1894, they were moved to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In his old age, Geronimo became a celebrity. He appeared at fairs, including the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, and sold souvenirs and photographs of himself. However, he was not allowed to return to the land of his birth. He also rode in President Theodore Roosevelt's 1905 inaugural parade.

In 1905, Geronimo agreed to tell his story to S.M. Barrett, Superintendent of Education in Lawton, Oklahoma. Barrett had to appeal to President Roosevelt to gain permission to publish the book. Geronimo came to each interview knowing exactly what he wanted to say. He refused to answer questions or alter his narrative. Barrett did not seem to take many liberties with Geronimo's story as translated by Asa Daklugie. Frederick Turner re-edited this autobiography by removing some of Barrett's footnotes and writing an introduction for the non-Apache readers. Turner notes the book is in the style of an Apache reciting part of his oral history.[6]

Geronimo died of pneumonia on February 17, 1909 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was buried at the Apache Indian Prisoner of War Cemetery there.

Religion

Geronimo (right) and his warriors in 1886

Geronimo was raised with the traditional religious views of the Bedonkohe. When questioned about his views on life after death, he wrote in his 1905 autobiography, "As to the future state, the teachings of our tribe were not specific, that is, we had no definite idea of our relations and surroundings in after life. We believed that there is a life after this one, but no one ever told me as to what part of man lived after death...We held that the discharge of one's duty would make his future life more pleasant, but whether that future life was worse than this life or better, we did not know, and no one was able to tell us. We hoped that in the future life family and tribal relations would be resumed. In a way we believed this, but we did not know it." [7]

Later in life, Geronimo embraced Christianity, and stated, "Since my life as a prisoner has begun I have heard the teachings of the white man's religion, and in many respects believe it to be better than the religion of my fathers...Believing that in a wise way it is good to go to church, and that associating with Christians would improve my character, I have adopted the Christian religion. I believe that the church has helped me much during the short time I have been a member. I am not ashamed to be a Christian, and I am glad to know that the President of the United States is a Christian, for without the help of the Almighty I do not think he could rightly judge in ruling so many people. I have advised all of my people who are not Christians, to study that religion, because it seems to me the best religion in enabling one to live right." [8]He joined the Dutch Reformed Church in 1903 but four years later was expelled for gambling.[9] To the end of his life, he seemed to harbor ambivalent religious feelings, telling the Christian missionaries at a summer camp meeting in 1908 that he wanted to start over, while at the same time telling his tribesmen that he held to the old Apache religion.[10]

Theft of remains

Portrait of Geronimo by Edward S. Curtis, 1905.

In 1918, certain remains of Geronimo were stolen in a grave robbery. Three members of the Yale secret society of Skull and Bones served as Army volunteers at Fort Sill during World War I; one of those three members was Prescott Bush, father of the forty-first President of the United States George H. W. Bush and grandfather of George W. Bush. They reportedly stole Geronimo's skull, some bones, and other items, including Geronimo's prized silver bridle, from the Apache Indian Prisoner of War Cemetery. The stolen items were alleged to have been taken to the society's tomb-like headquarters on the Yale University campus, and are supposedly used in rituals practiced by the group, one of which is said to be kissing the skull of Geronimo as an initiation. The story was known for many years but widely considered unlikely or apocryphal, and while the society itself remained silent, former members have said that they believed the bones were fake or non-human, possibly in an attempt at misdirection.[original research?]

Geronimo's grave at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 2005.

In a contemporary letter discovered by the Yale historian Marc Wortman and published in the Yale Alumni Magazine in 2006, society member Winter Mead wrote to F. Trubee Davison:

The skull of the worthy Geronimo the Terrible, exhumed from its tomb at Fort Sill by your club... is now safe inside the tomb ("tomb" is the building at Yale University's Skull and Bones) and bone together with his well worn femurs, bit and saddle horn.[11]

This prompted the Indian chief's great-grandson, Harlyn Geronimo of Mescalero, New Mexico, to write to President Bush requesting his help in returning the remains:

According to our traditions the remains of this sort, especially in this state when the grave was desecrated ... need to be reburied with the proper rituals ... to return the dignity and let his spirits rest in peace

Pure Digital Flip Ultra Series F 230 Camcorder

Pocket a Flip Ultra pocket camcorder for $59.99

I don't like to go to the Woot well too often, but today's deal is an outright winner (and it let me indulge my love of alliteration). Today only, you can get a recertified Pure Digital Flip Video Ultra F230 pocket camcorder for $59.99, plus $5 for two-day shipping (which just squeaks you in under the Chanukah wire). You even get to pick the color.

In case you're unfamiliar with it, the Flip Video Ultra records VGA-quality video to internal memory, then plugs into your PC via a stowaway USB plug for easy uploading to friends, relatives, YouTube, etc. (Admirably simple built-in software makes this possible.)

The F230 model holds only 30 minutes of video, which is actually fine for the kinds of short-burst clips you're likely to shoot with this thing anyway.

And let's be honest: It's a toy. You wouldn't use this to record, say, a wedding, but it's fantastic for goofing around with friends, sharing cute clips of the kids with faraway relatives, and the like.

Because this is a refurb, it carries a 90-day warranty--but, really, what's to break? The Flip Ultra makes for an awesome stocking stuffer, IMHO, and at $59.99 it's quite a bit cheaper than you'll find it elsewhere. These will sell out before the day is done, I expect. Maybe before lunchtime.

Features:

  • 1GB flash based camcorder can record up to 30 minutes of video, with out the need for tapes, or SD cards
  • 2x optical zoom with instant play back and delete
  • Built-in USB switch blade style arm, acts like a typical USB flash drive, drag and drop
  • Simple camorder, shooting video is as easy as taking a picture

Seattle Public Schools

Seattle Public Schools starts phone-notification system

The first calls started 5:30 a.m. Monday to let Seattle families know that schools would open late due to the cold and snow.

Some families got a second — then a third — call on their cellphones. They arrived at work to find messages there, too.

Seattle Public Schools used its new phone-notification system for the first time Monday, and it's fair to say some families felt very informed about the late school-start times.

The district didn't start calling until 6 a.m. Tuesday because on Monday, many parents said 5:30 a.m. was too early, said district spokesman David Tucker.

On Tuesday, the district also decided that if there's another late-start day Wednesday, it will just call home numbers, not all the numbers that families list as emergency contacts.

District spokesman David Tucker acknowledged that there's been a "variety of opinions" about the new system, but he said most of the responses have been positive.

Not all families have access to the Internet, he said, where they can look up whether school will be delayed or closed. And many are glad to get a call from the district so they don't have to search for the information on radio or TV.

Many elementary-school principals also reported that fewer students showed up to school two hours early because they didn't get the word, Tucker said.

The new system, he said, was funded out of an emergency-management grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Parents can request that a phone number not be called for weather delays or closures, he said, but then that number wouldn't be called in emergencies either.

School Board

The Board of Directors for Seattle Public Schools is an elected body representing seven geographical regions, known as Districts, within the City of Seattle. The length of the term is four years. Board meetings are generally held twice monthly. For the 2008-09 school year, board meetings are scheduled the second and fourth Wednesday of the month; all others are on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, at 6:00 p.m., with some exceptions

History

In 1919 there were 64 grammar schools, 6 high schools, 2 parental schools (comparable to today's youth detention centers), a school for the deaf, and 9 "special schools... for pupils who do not progress normally in regular classes."[9][10]

In the early 20th century, Seattle Public Schools were "exemplary"[11] under the leadership (1901–1922) of superintendent Frank B. Cooper and a series of "civic-minded progressives" who served on the Seattle school board.

Shayna West

Shayna West Parachute Fall Survivor who was pregnant

Shayna West Barely Survives 50 Mph Sky-Diving Accident And Was Pregnant.

Shayna West, a woman who survived a skydiving accident hitting the payment of a parking lot at 50 mph realized something after the fall. Tuesday on NBC's "Today" show she talked about the incident of 3 years ago, and how she was blessed by another miracle besides surviving. Shayna West was 2 weeks along pregnant when she hit the payment.
Shayna West talked about her life Tuesday on NBC's 'Today,' three years after surviving a skydiving accident while pregnant.

West, 24, a graduate of Ash Grove High School in Missouri, only learned after the accident that she was pregnant.

She was making her sixth skydiving jump on October 9, 2005. However within seconds, things went wrong. Her main parachute failed to open properly and she began spiraling out of control.

Her reserve parachute failed as well and she hit the pavement at 50 mph breaking many bones including her face, leg, and pelvis. Both she and her son survived.

Just six weeks after her son Tanner was born, she went skydiving again to face her fear. This time, it was a tandem jump.

"I faced my fear. I wasn't going to let it be something that always controlled me," said West.

Biggest Loser

Victory for Michelle, death threats for Vicky

Good triumphed over....Vicky. And Heba.

Michelle won $250,000 and the title of "The Biggest Loser" tonight, overcoming a childhood traumatized by divorce and, perhaps more importantly, beating out two fellow competitors who were seen as two of the most conniving and unappealing contestants in the show's history.

"I earned it," said Michelle, who joined the show as a duo alongside her mother, Renee, and immediately became a fan favorite both because of her doggedness in the gym and her kind, forgiving demeanor. Michelle had been estranged from her mother for years after her parents' divorce. America had a front-row seat as the two repaired their relationship and lost a combined 216 pounds.

Michelle alone lost 110 pounds, or an astonishing 45.45% of her body weight, to win the game and become only the second woman to win "The Biggest Loser" title.

For fans of the show, though, Michelle's victory was all the more sweet because it came at the expense of Vicky and Heba....

Heba, you may recall, came into the house as a bit of a bully -- make that a big loud bully -- who immediately began throwing her weight around to get her way. (Blame it on her husband, Ed, who apparently spends his life trying to do everything he can to make/keep her happy.)

She created divides and alliances in the house, and was the first to turn the tables on a competitor -- and then spent the rest of her time at the Biggest Loser ranch complaining bitterly and loudly at any smack of game playing that didn't suit her purposes.

Well, Heba finally got hers. Kinda.

In an odd twist of fate, Heba and Ed ended up competing for the third spot in the finals. The decision was left up to the public to vote between the two. Ed, being the dutiful husband, begged America to let his wife win. Heba also begged America to let her win.

America gave her the backhand: In a "landslide" vote, 84% of the votes cast were against Heba.

Heba didn't go home empty-handed, however. She was eligible for and won the $100,000 runners-up prize for losing 138 pounds, or 46.94% of her body weight.

In other words, if she had curried a little more favor with the public, she would have landed the third-place spot -- and she would have won.

Afterward, asked why America voted against her, she said "I guess there are just a lot of negative people out there who don't like to see success." (Heba, who said she wanted to join the show to lose weight so she could have a healthy pregnancy, said family planning is on hold for now: "I want to spend a summer where I can wear a bathing suit and not feel bad about myself. Call me when that's over.")

Vicky, meanwhile -- who was dubbed by trainer Bob Harper to be "Shakespearean" in her efforts to manipulate her teammates -- missed winning the $250,000 prize by 1 pound.

See? There is justice after all.

In an interview after the show, Vicky said she was unfairly depicted on the show. While she said the producers could have portrayed her positively as a mother struggling to balance work and family and improve the health of her two children, they chose to portray her as a schemer.

To hear her tell it, it was all camerawork.

She has been so widely reviled that she had to change her phone number because she was receiving death threats, and to this day continues to receive letters telling her what a horrible person she is.

"Most people hate my guts," Vicky said, later adding that perhaps so many people disliked her because she was a determined competitor who knew what she wanted and wasn't about to let anyone stand in her way. "Women need to be strong and they need to use their heads."

She also added: "I feel bad for the people who are writing those letters. They don't know me."

On a completely unrelated note:

It's impossible to say whether Vicky was misportrayed or not (although the fact that Mr. Nice Guy Bob Harper called her out for being manipulative suggests that she doth protesteth too much.)

But I can report firsthand that TV does not become Vicky.

She often looked haggard during the game, even after her makeover. In person, though, she is a head-turner, with clear, smooth skin, bright teeth and stunning green eyes.

Art Tributes for Disneyland Rides

Art Tributes for Disneyland Rides - SHAG Honors Haunted Mansion’s 40th (GALLERY)
It’s hard to believe that Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride is celebrating its 40th anniversary next year. On August 9, 2009, hipster artist SHAG is releasing his line of art dedicated to the iconic ride in a special signing at the Haunted Mansion.

SHAG has created 13 pieces of art that depict different areas of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride; we’ve featured ten favorites in the gallery. On the evening of August 8, buyers can purchase the prints at a celebratory cocktail party. Will it be inside the Haunted Mansion? One can only hope…

California lowbrow artist Shag has been doing a bit of work with Disneyland lately. Back in 2003 he created art and merchandise to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Enchanted Tiki Room; for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary in 2005 he created more art and merchandise (which also was used in the park’s marketing efforts that year).

Getting Paid to List Classifieds

Getting Paid to List Classifieds - Listasaurus.com

For those of you out there who love to find ways to make extra money, how about getting paid to list your classifieds and auction ads?

Listasaurus.com is the first website that pays you just to list your classifieds and auctions, so instead of paying fees like on eBay, they will pay you just for listing your ad, even if you don’t sell your item or have something you’re giving away!

They do have guidelines and criteria for what makes an ad eligible for payment...and you get paid 25 cents per ad, but hey, it all adds up in my book.

Also, another feature that makes Listasaurus.com quite the pioneer is you can include video in your listings! They’re one of the only video classifieds sites out there--and they say they’re the first site to feature video auctions. I haven’t even seen video on eBay yet!

I think it’s a great website with a lot to offer… definitely ahead of the curve as far as the video goes, and getting paid is also a bonus.

Mosaic Ads

Mosaic Ads - IKEA ‘Long Live Diversity’ Campaign (GALLERY)
IKEA ‘Long Live Diversity’ Campaign

Remember the Steve Jobs mosaic that went viral earlier this year which had his face created with Apple products? Well, it was bound to happen that ad agencies would jump on the idea. We’ve already seen Wonderbra billboards that use images of over 8,000 women, but IKEA stays true to the Jobs concept by having ads with faces of people made from mosaics of IKEA products.

Created by Forsman & Bodenfors (Gothenburg, Sweden), the ads are part of the ‘Long Live Diversity’ campaign which celebrates diversity with IKEA outdoor billboards on bus stops, train stations, and street signs. The billboards show mosaic images of people of all ages, shapes, skin colors and ethnicities.

Agency: Forsman & Bodenfors, Gothenburg; Media Agency: MEC; Reproduction/Retouch/Original: Factory F&B; Advertiser's Supervisor: Christine Eliasson; Project leader: Susanna Fagring, Olle Victorin; Production manager: Ewa Edlund, Elin Sohlberg; AD: Anders Eklind, Anna Helmet; Copy: Fredrik Jansson, Anders Hegerfors; Designer: Christoffer Persson; Illustrator: Charis Tsevis (Tsevis Visual Design).

Windmill Inspired Stadiums

Windmill Inspired Stadiums - The Estadio Internacional in Monterrey (GALLERY)
The Estadio Internacional in Monterrey

You’d be forgiven if, at first glance, you mistook this rendering for a UFO, but it is the concept work of HOK Sport for a new stadium to be built in Monterrey, Mexico.

The idea was inspired by the Mexican festivities, “the rehilete” when a windmill is give to children to celebrate national day. The overall design of this stadium is influenced by the design of a windmill. The sections of the building are constructed from eight steel mesh overlapping “leaves” which can change color using variable lighting within, thus giving the appearance of a fan or windmill turning. The weaving of the mesh is formed along the lines of a traditional native Mexican basket weave.

The Estadio Internacional will be an 80,000 seat stadium, which will host soccer, NFL and international athletics.

“Mexican Wave, has been adopted all over the world as a statement of people having fun, celebrating life,” says HOK’s Ron Sheard said. “The wave originated in Mexico in 1984 from the University Stadium in an exhibition game between Mexico and Argentina. We were enthusiastic to design a stadium that possessed something of that magic, fun loving spirit and evoking the roots of the Mexican pre-Hispanic culture.”

The Japanese public transportation network is 12,000 miles long and some of its trains are beautifully decorated with anime, manga and cartoon characters, the creations of Japanese artists and other motifs.

For example, there are trains embellished with the cartoon Pikachu. There is also a Spiderman and a Doraemon train. You will also find a plethora of manga and anime characters.

I really wish this artistic embellishments could be done on New York City’s vast public transportation network, but I have a feeling that this scheme would not fly with the jaded NYC denizens.

$1600 OLED Keyboards

$1600 OLED Keyboards (UPDATE) - The Optimus Maximus (GALLERY)
The Optimus Maximus

We heard of the The Optimus Maximus keyboard ages ago, but because there were so few images, we hadn’t entertained the thought that we might actually start seeing them adorn the rosewood desktops of real homes so soon.

The Optimus Maximus pictures in the gallery show a remarkable display of brilliantly lit, colorful icons, each of which operates as an OLED display to reveal its function (whatever you happened to have customized it to do.)

It can be used with any language, from Ancient Greek to Arabic to Japanese hiragana, and perform a range of calculations and complex operations, depending what you want your Optimus Maximus keyboard to do.

Back in 2006, we had said, “Due to be released and mass produced this summer 2006, (practically on our doorstep), the Optimus OLED Keyboard designed by Artemy Lebedev is expected to cost around $200, although prices will eventually drop down as demand increases for the new technology.”

Guess we were wrong.

The Art Lebedev Optimus Maximus keyboard can now be bought, but for a staggering $1600.

Glass Box Architecture

Glass Box Architecture - The Curiosity/Milligram House (GALLERY)
The Curiosity/Milligram House

Although I personally find it hard to imagine living in the minimalist manner, this extreme example of paring all elements of habitation to the barest level has a certain appeal. Shunning all clutter and embellishment, from the austere but stunning exterior, to the incredible serenity of the kitchen and bath, this Curiosity/Milligram collaboration takes minimalism to the nth degree, while retaining a sense of design and style.

The basic design arose from a glass box combined with a walkway to connect the different floors, as seen in the exterior view.

With all the senses constantly bombarded, it makes sense to pair the living environment down to its basic level; unfortunately, it just seems like it would be quite difficult to maintain in the real world, but it would be worth a try.

Freakitechture

Freakitechture - Curving Escalators at Star Place (GALLERY)
Curving Escalators at Star Place

How about this challenge: design a ten story escalator that must curve?

It proved to be no problem for UNStudio. They created Star Place, a department store in Taiwan that has a curved shape and glows like a star. Inside is a 10-story atrium where the architects created spiral, moving stairs by putting escalators around the center axis.

Technically acting as a sunscreen and weather barrier the curved façade is fully glazed and combines the curtain wall glazing with horizontal lamellas and vertical glass fins. The position and size of each of the façade elements are derived from a twisted frame system, which is related to the interior organisation of the building. The concave front of the building displays different fluent forms when seen from varying distances and directs the visual field of the customers.

Robot Chefs

Robot Chefs - The Motoman SDA10 (VIDEO)
The Motoman SDA10

Fellow bots: The Motoman SDA10 robot is one of our bots who will work alongside humans. So that humans will not feel threatened, our good friend, who is working the Next Generation Robot Fair will be acting like a McDonald’s employee. This will help humans adapt to their new work environment after we have obtained all the high-paying technical jobs.

In the video above, the Motoman SDA10 demonstrates its ability to work independently as it assembles a disposable camera from 24 parts in two minutes.

Dark Dining Projects

Dark Dining Projects: Sensory Feasts for Blindfolded Guests
Sensory Feasts for Blindfolded Guests

Feasts for the Senses - Don a blindfold and let us lead you into an environment created by a respected artist in collaboration with some of the finest chefs of our day. Wearing a specially designed “Mindfold” blindfold, you are immersed in darkness; eyes open or closed, you experience the perfect blackout.

Each event is unique and features a different menu and artists/performers. Notice the unexpected. Let your other senses take over. Perhaps there is something unexpectedly hard, warm or smooth in the breadbasket, or you are swept up in the percussion of a rainstorm. You might hear the sound of a dancer’s feet slapping the floor.

As you savor the luxurious food and fine wine, challenge your palate to tease out the mysteries of the menu. Then, afterwards, test yourself against the sealed menu card which reveals the event’s menu and artists.

A Few Specifics

Vegetarian Menu - When you make your reservations, please let us know if you prefer a vegetarian menu.

Allergies - When you make your reservations, please let us know if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions.

Blindfolds
As you enter, you are handed a blindfold to wear throughout the event. No peeking. If you need any assistance, simply ask or raise a hand; there are always several people ready to help to you. “Mindfolds,” are extremely comfortable blindfolds with adjustable velcro closures and foam pads which permit wearers to open their eyes. Originally designed as meditation masks, they provide absolute blackout. Diners have the option to buy the Mindfold they use at a fraction of their usual price.

Restroom Trips
If you need to use the bathroom, simply ask or raise hand. You will be escorted there. Once inside, you may remove the Mindfold. The room will be lit. When you are ready to come out, put your Mindfold back on and tap on the door. Your escort will lead you back to your table.

Reservations
Reservations are made by phoning the hosting restaurant or venue.
See Upcoming Events.

Are Dark Dinings art performances or dining experiences?
Both; they are participatory art events revolving around sensory awareness, fine food and eating.

Seeing is believing

Seeing is believing -- device helps the blind read

device helps the blind read

whole new world opened up for Tommy Craig as he tested a new handheld device for the blind that converts print to audio.

Craig was able to “read” everything from menus to cooking directions by positioning the reader over print and taking a picture. In seconds, the device’s synthetic voice read the printed message to him.

“The reader provides access to materials that a lot of times you just didn’t read,” said Craig, 51, of Austin, Texas, who was one of about 500 blind people who tested the device over the past few months. “It certainly makes you more independent.”

$10 Hand-Held Braille Writer

$10 Hand-Held Braille Writer

A group of university students at Johns Hopkins University has created a hand-held braille writer made from inexpensive mechanical parts. The device is expected to cost as low as $10.

From Johns Hopkins University:
To help provide a low-cost communication tool for blind people, undergraduates at The Johns Hopkins University have invented a lightweight, portable Braille writing device that requires no electronic components.

For a class called Engineering Design Project, four mechanical engineering majors were asked to produce such an instrument that would cost less than $50 each. The more sophisticated and generally more cumbersome typewriter-style or computer-based Braille writers available to blind people typically cost much more.

At the end of a two-semester research, design and testing process, the student inventors came in well below the target price. They estimated that their Braille writer, if mass-produced, would cost about $10 each in an easy-to-assemble kit. The team members recently presented their prototype to the project’s sponsor, the Baltimore- based National Federation of the Blind.

Bionic Eye Restores Sight to the Blind

Bionic Eye Restores Sight to the Blind

Scientists have made incredible advancements in the development of technology that has the ability to restore sight. The first phase of development has successfully restored patients sight to the pont where light and motion is discernable and the outlines of well-defined objects can be identified.

Phase two will enhance these abilities and include several additional light-sensitive electrodes and plans are to advance the technology to the point where blind patients can discern faces and be able to get around on their own.

This bionic eye may be available commercially as soon as 2009, given the great success seen so far.

A bionic eye that can restore sight to the blind should be available commercially within two years... An early version of the prosthetic retina has already been fitted to six patients... All have recovered the ability to detect light and motion, and even to make out large letters and to distinguish between objects such as a cup, a knife and a plate. The second-generation device that is now starting trials should provide even better vision, as it contains 60 light-sensitive electrodes, compared with 16 in the previous model. More improvements are expected within five to seven years with a 1000-electrode implant that will enable previously blind people to recognize faces, Humayun said.
